Abia govt commences workers’ credential certification

Sequel to the directive by the Abia State government for its workers to upload their certificates and service credentials for record purposes, 7,582 of the 36,875 workforce, so far, have uploaded theirs and have been forwarded to various institutions for verification and certification.

The Commissioner for Information and Culture, Prince Okey Kanu, who disclosed this, added that a total of 25,458 career documents have similarly been uploaded to designated points.

Members of the workers’ union, who had protested against this directive, started complying with it when they got convinced that the directive was well intended, especially as salaries of those that did not comply were reportedly withheld or threatened.

The  Commissioner also disclosed the government’s advanced plan to roll out Compressed Natural Gas (CMG) buses in the state to cushion the effect of the new regulated operation time for Tricycle (Keke) and Motorcycle (Okada) in Aba and Umuahia from 7:00 p.m. to 6:00 a.m. when it takes effect from August 2024.

He said: “As part of incentives to operators in the transport sector to drive this new policy, the state government plans to introduce CNG-powered buses to complement whatever gaps that would be created by the full implementation of the restriction policy.”

According to Kanu, the arrangement will be such that Tricycle (Keke) and Motorcycle (Okada ) operators will form cooperatives or clusters to access these buses to ensure that commuters still move around, especially during  the  period of restriction of Keke and Okada operation.
