DR. Peace Okonkwo, a woman of God, whose love for women and children is exceptional and is manifested in her readiness to go an extra mile for these groups of people, turns 63 today.
It was her love for women and children that gave birth to the International Women Prayer Conference (IWPC), an interdenominational gathering of women that holds every month at the TREM headquarters in Lagos.
The success of the program in Lagos has caused a spread to other towns in Nigeria including Port Harcourt, Abuja, Enugu, Asaba, Warri to mention a few and has also spread to other nations including Gabon, Cote D’Ivoire, United Kingdom, Israel and the United States of America.
Still concerned about the plight of women and the ease of death in the hands of treatable diseases, the PEACE Campaign was flagged off on the June 9, 2012. P.E.A.C.E. an acronym for Providing Early Attention for Cervical Cancer Everywhere, runs free medical check up for men, women and children with specific emphasis on cervical and breast cancer screening for women and deworming for children.
Today over 8,000 women have been screened while over 12,000 people have enjoyed free medical check up with provision of over the counter drugs prescribed by the doctors on the team.
All of the humanitarian services come under the umbrella of the Women of Global Impact with the target to be a source of succour, inspiration and empowerment for women at all levels of the society and helping national development through empathy, trust, motivation and non-discriminatory support initiatives.
The major initiatives through which the Women of Global Impact network reaches out to provide support for women include: International Women Prayer Conference, Rehoboth Homes and Skills Acquisition Center, Widows Empowerment Initiative, Children Education Support, Orphanage Support and Free Cervical Cancer Screening Program.
She is the Proprietress of Word of Power Group of Schools, and founder Rehoboth Homes and Skill Acquisition Centre; a place for stranded ladies. In December, she also extended her goodwill to Ogbunike where the Rehoboth Skill Acquisition Centre was opened in December 2014.
This is in addition to her regular Christmas gift to widows through her Widows Support Initiative – a program that has been on for over 12 years. She is a member of Board of Trustees and Advisers of TREM, the Coordinator of the Women and Children TREM worldwide and Resident Pastor of TREM headquarters.
In 2005, she was the recipient of the Nigerian Woman of the Year Award by the Media Dreams Network and also the Eastern Nigeria Role Model Award. She is married to Bishop Mike Okonkwo and they are blessed with a daughter, Uche.
