Brown Ideye says Super Eagles team lacks discipline, passion to win 2023 AFCON

Former Super Eagles striker Brown Ideye

Former Super Eagles striker, Brown Ideye, said he is not sure that Nigeria can win the 2023 African Cup of Nations (AFCON) which will take place in Cote d’Ivoire.

Ideye won the 2013 AFCON in South Africa under the late coach Stephen Keshi alongside Kasimpasa defender, Kenneth Omeruo and Sivasspor attacker, Ahmed Musa who are in the current Super Eagles squad.

While speaking to 54footballx’s The Football Booth 2.0 about the Super Eagles campaign at the upcoming AFCON on Wednesday, Ideye raised doubts about their ability to emerge as champions.

“We have the players, but we don’t have a team. This team lacks discipline and passion for the country. I’m not sure they can win in Cote d’Ivoire,” he said.

“They should all gather in the room of Ahmed Musa and discuss with him and Kenneth Omeruo. They need Musa and Omeruo to tell them how we conquered Africa in 2013.

“The discipline, the sacrifices, and how we fought and tasked ourselves when everyone have given up on us.”

Musa, has meanwhile expressed confidence in Nigeria to win the 2023 AFCON due to the quality of players in the final 25-man squad.

Nigeria will be vying for a fourth AFCON title in Ivory Coast, having won in Lagos in 1980, Tunisia in 1994 and South Africa in 2013.

The three-time AFCON champions will confront two-time winners and host nation, Ivory Coast in Group A.

They will also face Equatorial Guinea and Guinea Bissau at the Alassane Ouattara Stadium in Abidjan.
