HEDA urges investigation of MDAs as chieftain tasks Tinubu on probity

Bola Tinubu

Human and Environmental Development Agenda (HEDA Resource Centre) has charged President Bola Tinubu to investigate Ministries, Departments and Agencies (MDAs), as well as their finances.

According to the organisation, the probe would underscore the importance of his commitment to combating corruption.

It agreed with the President on suspending all social investment schemes administered by the National Social Investment Programme Agency.

The group said the decision was a supportive measure for existing investigation into alleged malfeasance within MDAs nationwide.

In a statement at the weekend, HEDA chairman, Olanrewaju Suraju, noted that the National Social Investment Programme Agency had been under scrutiny since the suspension of its Chief Executive Officer, Halima Shehu.

The focus of the investigation, Suraju said, is the reported laundering of N37.1 billion within the Ministry of Humanitarian Affairs, Disaster Management and Social Development, under the watch of the former minister, Sadiya Umar-Farouq.

He added that President Tinubu’s suspension of Farouq’s successor, Betta Edu, who is now being questioned by the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC), reignited the scenario.

Edu is alleged to have ordered transfer of N585 million to a private account owned by one Oniyelu Bridget, identified as Project Accountant for Grants for Vulnerable Groups.

HEDA, therefore, called on EFCC to beam its searchlight on permanent secretaries and project accountants to establish their culpability or otherwise in the mismanagement and diversion of public funds.

In a related development, National Ambassador of Micro, Small and Medium Enterprises and ex-beneficiary of the N-Power programme, Orioye Benedict Gbayisemore, at the weekend, hailed Tinubu’s swift handling of the NSIP crisis.

Gbayisemore, who described the NSIP as the largest welfarist project in Africa, stated that the programmes have affected households across the federation.

He urged the President to be decisive about alleviating poverty in the country.

Also, an All Progressives Congress (APC) chieftain in Osun State, Olatunbosun Oyintiloye, has implored the President to undertake integrity tests of cabinet members to achieve his Renewed Hope Agenda.

The former member of the defunct APC Presidential Campaign Council made the call yesterday while speaking with journalists in Osogbo.

He said the review would not only ensure that the agenda is not compromised, but also allows for transparency and accountability by aides, heads of ministries, departments and agencies of government.

Recall that the President, during a retreat for cabinet members, promised to run a quarterly performance review of aides.

This, he said, would be done through the office of his Special Adviser on Policy Coordination, as head of the new Performance Bond, which contains key performance indicators (KPIs) to monitor and measure performances of ministers.

The ex-lawmaker said through the exercise, performances of cabinet members would not only be measured by numerical achievements, but rather how the resources committed to their hands are utilised for the good of Nigerians.
