Okuama Killing: Monarch flown to Abuja for questioning

CP Abaniwonda Olufemi

The Ovie of Ewu-Urhobo in Ughelli South Local Council, His Royal Majesty, Clement Oghenerukevwe Ikolo Urhukpe 1, allegedly involved in the gruesome killing of 17 military personnel in Okuama community, has been flown to Defence Headquarters, Abuja, for further interrogations.

The traditional ruler, who is among the suspects declared wanted last Thursday by Defence Headquarters, reportedly surrendered himself to the Delta State Police Command, Asaba, and was received by the Police Commissioner, CP Abaniwonda Olufemi, on Thursday evening.

The military authorities were subsequently notified following which the monarch was flown to Abuja yesterday morning. The suspect was escorted to the Asaba Airport by the Commanding Officer, 63 Brigade, Nigerian Army, Asaba; the Delta State Commissioner of Police and other senior military officers.

The monarch, accompanied by a combined team of military officers, police personnel as well as his personal aides, later boarded Air Peace airline and the plane departed the tarmac of Asaba Airport around 9:10am to Abuja.

The Delta State Police Public Relations Officer, SP Edafe Bright, who confirmed the development, said the suspect has been handed over to the military authorities for further investigations.

He said: “Yes, I can confirm to you that the wanted traditional ruler has been handed over to military authorities. He is no longer in our custody. The handover process was concluded this morning.”

Okuama, an Urhobo community in Ughelli South local council, is one of the over 40 communities under the rulership of the monarch in Ewu-Urhobo Kingdom.

The monarch had been living in London, United Kingdom, before his selection and crowning as Ovie of Ewu-Urhobo Kingdom. He was presented with a staff of office by Delta State Governor, Sheriff Oborevwori, in November last year and was purported to be away from his kingdom since his coronation ceremony following a legal tussle arising from his selection to the throne.
