Police arrest 125 suspected criminals, recover firearms, illicit drugs, others in Imo

Operatives of Imo State Police Command have arrested 125 suspects for allegedly committing various crimes such as kidnapping, armed robbery, child trafficking, murder, and unlawful possession of firearms and illicit drugs.

The command’s spokesperson, Henry Okoye, in a statement yesterday, said the arrests were made based on efforts put in place by the Commissioner of Police (CP), Aboki Danjuma.

He said in the course of investigating the aforesaid cases, seven firearms, two vehicles, 500kg of a substance suspected to be Cannabis sativa, Biafra currency notes, and other exhibits were recovered, while eight pregnant teenagers were rescued.

Okoye stressed that the breakthrough was a result of intelligent-led operations, continuous raids of suspected criminal hideouts, actionable information obtained from well-meaning residents of the state, and synergy with other security agencies.

He added that another intelligence-led raid culminated in busting a criminal hideout on June 27, at Ofuzor Afor Egbu, in Owerri North Local Council of the state, leading to the arrest of a couple, Stanley Joseph Onyebuchi, 45, and Ngozi Joseph, 35, who were suspected dealers of hard drugs.

Items recovered from them included “nine bags of suspected Cannabis sativa, weighing over 500kg, crystal meth, and a Toyota Sienna with Reg No: FST 39 GY.”

In another development, Okoye said following a tip-off on July 1, that armed persons were at No. 10, Nekede Road, along Zaga Suite, robbing and sexually assaulting members of the public, operatives moved in and arrested seven suspects. He said the suspects were searched on the spot and a bag containing one locally made single barreled shotgun was recovered.
