South-West education commissioners to meet on Yoruba language

EKOEXCEL affirms commitment to mother tongue in Lagos schools

Commissioners for Education in South-West, Kwara and Kogi states will meet in Ibadan on March 3, 2022, to deliberate on the protection, preservation and promotion of Yoruba language organised by the new Yoruba World Centre, a project launched by Vice President Yemi Osinbajo last November.

The meeting, in collaboration with Oodua Investment Plc and DAWN Commission, is to discuss extensively the coming yearly Yoruba Language Millionaire Contest among secondary schools in all Yoruba-speaking states for the reclaim of Yoruba youths hooked to foreign ways of life.

ALSO, the Lagos State Universal Basic Education Board’s (LASUBEB) EKOEXCEL has said it will continue to encourage the use of the mother tongue as a medium of instruction and uphold excellence as the gold standard of all its operations.

EKOEXCEL stated this in commemoration of the 2022 International Mother Language Day yesterday, Monday, February 21, 2022.

LASUBEB’s Executive Chairman, Wahab Alawiye-King, said teachers, under the scheme, were not rigid but used the mother tongue to aid pupils’ understanding whenever necessary.
